PDF password protect

PDF

Set an open (user) password on a PDF to restrict access — anyone opening the file must enter the password to view its contents. The document is encrypted using standard PDF encryption (AES-128 for modern PDFs, RC4 128-bit for older ones) and exported as a new protected file. Useful for protecting sensitive contracts, financial statements, invoices, and personal documents before sharing by email or cloud storage. All processing runs locally in your browser — the PDF and password are never uploaded.

FAQ

What is an open (user) password?

An open password — also called the user password — is required to open and view the PDF. This tool sets an open password only; it does not set an owner (permissions) password that restricts printing or copying once the file is opened.

Which encryption is used?

The encryption strength is determined by the source PDF's version: modern PDFs (1.7) are encrypted with AES-128, while older PDFs use RC4 128-bit. AES-256 is only applied to PDFs that already target the PDF 2.0 specification.

Can I remove the password later?

If you still know the password, you can open the file and re-export an unprotected copy. This tool only adds an open password; it does not remove existing protection, and a lost password cannot be recovered.

Is my PDF or password uploaded to a server?

No. Encryption runs entirely in your browser using a local library; the PDF and the password you set never leave your device.
